International Student Off-Campus Life Guide

Transportation, healthcare, supermarket tips

🚍 Transportation Tips

Getting around Seattle can be easy and affordable with the right tips. Here’s what you need to know:

If you are 19 years old or older, you need to get a transit card.

  • ORCA Card: Apply for a discounted student ORCA card from the college. It works for buses, light rail, and streetcars around Seattle.
  • Bus System: Use Google Maps to plan your route. Don’t forget to tap your ORCA card when entering and exiting.
  • Link Light Rail: Great for getting to the airport or downtown. The closest station to campus is Capitol Hill Station — just a 5-minute walk.
  • Biking & Walking: Seattle is a walkable city with many bike lanes. You can also use Lime or Bird e-scooters.
✅ Tip: Always check bus schedules on weekends or late nights — they may run less frequently.

🏥 Healthcare Tips

  • Insurance Requirement: International students are required to have health insurance. Visit the website to learn more. Check with the International Programs office if you’re unsure.
  • Where to Go:
    • For emergencies: Go to the nearest hospital ER.
    • For non-emergencies: Visit clinics like ZoomCare, PlumTree, or Kaiser Permanente.
  • Mental Health Support: Seattle Central offers free counseling services. You can book appointments through the college website
✅ Tip: If it’s not an emergency, avoid going to the ER — it’s expensive. Try walk-in clinics or urgent care instead.
✅ Tip: Don't forget to purchuse insurance even if you are on a vacational quarter.

    • Whole Foods – pricier, but great for organic and specialty items.
  • Asian Markets:
    • M2M Mart – My most-often visit mart around Seattle Central College. Snacks and ready-to-eat meals provided. There's a little bakery inside the mart, don't forget to visit!
